U-Factor Ratings

If a room gets hammered by the afternoon sun, a lower-SHGC window can help keep things manageable, especially on west-facing walls that soak up direct light. On the flip side, a slightly higher SHGC can be a nice bonus in a room that could use some extra winter warmth. It really comes down to which direction the window faces and how you use that particular room.

Air Leakage

Air leakage measures how much outside air sneaks in through gaps in the window under standardized testing conditions. Lower numbers mean tighter windows.

Visible Transmittance

Visible transmittance, or VT, tells you how much daylight comes through a window. This scale also runs from 0 to 1. A higher number lets in more natural light, so a VT of 0.60 will brighten a room more than a VT of 0.40.

A low SHGC might keep a sunny room from overheating, but pair it with a low VT and that same room could end up feeling dim. If bright, sunlit rooms are important to you, take a look at both ratings instead of focusing on heat control alone.

Condensation Resistance

Condensation resistance shows how well a window keeps moisture from forming on its interior surface. This scale runs from 1 to 100, with higher numbers indicating greater resistance. Since this rating is optional, you won't find it on every label.

ENERGY STAR certification takes NFRC test results and checks them against efficiency requirements for a specific climate zone. ENERGY STAR evaluates U-factor and SHGC based on where the window will be installed, as well as air leakage limits.

Certification is a helpful benchmark, but it doesn't mean every certified window performs identically. Two windows can both carry the ENERGY STAR label while having noticeably different U-factor, SHGC, air leakage, and condensation ratings.
